What does it mean to be your own health advocate?
When dealing with my BII (breast implant illness,) I knew there was more going on than just typical aging. All my test results came back within normal limits, and this is when I knew I had to take matters into my own hands and advocate for my own health needs.
If you have ever had to believe in yourself and what you were experiencing without answers or facts to back you up, there is a good chance you’ve been an effective health advocate. Along with trusting in yourself and how you feel, you may need to understand your rights as a patient, solve a few problems on your own and proactively seek out the help you need. We must learn how to take charge of our health journey to wellness if transforming our health is the definitive goal.
Below, I have included some advocacy tips that helped me on my journey to health:
1. Do your research and talk to others. I communicated with several phenomenal women who were experiencing the same symptoms. This was my first step in starting my path to healing.
2. Asking questions…. No question is a dumb question!
3. Understanding your options. There were so many explant surgeons to choose from but exploring the right surgeon for me was imperative.
4. Be willing to look for a second or third opinion.
5. Get involved in your care so that you feel in control of your health. This allows for better outcomes.
6. Developing a partnership with your providers so you feel confident about your care.
7. Listen to your body! You know your body better than anyone and you know when something doesn’t feel right.
