I have said it once and I will say it again, VARIETY, VARIETY, VARIETY!
Variety is key for progression! I want you to think about the first time you have ever tried a new type of exercise. You might have been more prone to soreness afterwards, right?
When we create variation, we create new stimulus which leads to progression over time. However, it is important to apply variation appropriately to maximize results.
So, what keeps us from progressing? Something called adaptive resistance. This is when you have done the same exercise for a prolonged period and our body decides to no longer respond to it. Therefore, variation is so important for maximum results.
Another important key to know is that adaptive resistance INCREASES your risks of injury. This happens when we do the same boring routine over and over. Eventually, overuse of the same muscle tissue at the same pattern or angle creates more wear and tear making you more prone to injury.
Simply put if you run long distances you will excel in stamina and endurance. If you only lift weights, you will benefit more from strength and hypertrophy. This doesn’t inevitably mean by doing one of these activities, your body is going to make you better at the other exercise.
By incorporating yoga, high intensity interval training, kickboxing, swimming, etc., your body will be more physically stimulated and decrease your odds of plateau.
If you are like me, I get bored easily with a stagnant routine, blah!! Creating new workouts and trying new activities keep MY MIND HAPPY and my fitness routine fun and exciting. And, it keeps me progressing, which is key!
My clients never do the same workout twice and we develop a weekly schedule which encourages as much variety as possible.
I offer a four-month health and wellness program which includes individualized personal training with myself. If you are looking for an upgrade to your routine and are currently experiencing a plateau, feel free to contact me. I would be happy to connect with you! 💛
